Partnerships in our Community: Transforming our Online Classrooms with Power My Learning

PowerMyLearning currently supports six campuses in the Huntington Park Community of Schools through instructional coaching, teacher webinars, and online family workshops. Each school is supported by a Professional Learning Specialist that helps teachers learn new tools, techniques, and strategies to sharpen their instructional practice and engage families during distance learning.

PowerMyLearning has received great feedback from teachers in our community this year! A full 89% of teachers agree that PML workshops provide them with helpful knowledge and strategies. Of the teachers who attended the workshop on Teaming Up with Families, 83% said that the workshop made them more confident in their ability to build strong family partnerships. Of the teachers that attended the workshop on Building Intentional Relationships with Students, 100% said that the workshop made them more confident in their ability to build intentional relationships with students.

Some quotes from our workshop participants:

"I was reminded that I need to use formative assessments to actually inform instruction and adapt my lessons." (Formative Assessment Workshop, Nimitz)

"Through this workshop, I learned more tactics on how to approach students and parents when it comes to online teaching" (Teaming up with Families Workshop, Nimitz)

In addition to all-staff workshops, Kevin Fomengia, a PowerMyLearning Professional Learning Specialist, has been working closely with Mr. Hijazi, an 8th grade Math teacher at Gage Middle School. Together they have been determined to increase student engagement by creating a stimulating online learning environment. Mr. Hijazi has begun to implement several checks for understanding each day, including the strategic use of Zoom's chatbox. He now loves to use different digital tools to annotate math problems during live lessons and leverages a random name generator tool to ensure every student's voice is heard. In a few short weeks, our coach has witnessed a great improvement with students actively engaging in Mr. Hijazi's 8th grade math class.
